Get to Know Your Family!

So, take the time to get to know your new family. Before leaving worship service, get to know the names of the people on your row. Feel free to ask questions about activities and events you saw during the announcements. Go up and say hello to Pastor B and Lady D, they would love to talk to you. If you don’t remember someone’s name, don’t worry about it. Just ask them. If someone seems to have forgotten your name, don’t take offense. It happens to the best of us. Simply take them off the hook and gently remind them. Being new can sometimes feel awkward or overwhelming. But we are determined to make you feel like part of the family.

The Bible and its Message!

The Bible is a huge book with lots of information. In fact, it is made up of 66 books all rolled into one and is now the most important book in your life. The scriptures found in the bible govern the entire Christian faith. There are two very important aspects about the bible you should know.

First, the scriptures, which make up the Bible, are God’s self-revelation of himself. This is important because as a rule we can neither see nor hear God because he is a Spirit. We depend on God to reveal himself to us. The scriptures represent those things that God has chosen to reveal about himself, his creation, and his plan.

Secondly, God inspired the scriptures. In fact, 2 Timothy 3:16-17, tell us “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” That means, God himself inspired the authors by the power of His Spirit as to what was written. As result, everything we need to live a successful Godly life and to fulfill our purpose is in the Bible!

The good news is you have a lifetime to learn.  But, if you could sum up its message in in one scripture it would be Mark 12:30-31 when Jesus said, Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ 31 The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.” The center of the Christian message is love. We are to love God and love people. Just remember that this is the entire Biblical message in a “nutshell”. Sharing the love of God makes us an extremely strong family!

You are a Disciple of Jesus Christ!

Being family, we are not only brothers and sisters; we are all disciples of Jesus Christ. Discipleship has many characteristics. For one, a disciple is one who “follows” (Matthew 16:24). We all are followers of Christ who is our primary example of how we should live. Secondly, a disciple is one who shows love. Jesus said in John 13:35, By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Our love for each other in the family of God is a witness to the world that we are followers of Christ.  Finally, Disciples are also “Learners”. The Commission given by Christ to his disciples in Matthew 28:19-20 tells us to “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. Of course, we cannot teach others, unless we first learn ourselves.

Being a learner and a student of the Word of God is vital. The scriptures tell us in 1 Peter 2:2, “Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation”.  The “spiritual milk” that is referred to is the Word of God, of which we will ever be learning.

Developing a Prayer Life!

Finally, it’s extremely important to spend time on a daily basis in prayer. In the simplest terms, prayer is communicating with God. It includes, praising God, thanking God, inquiring of God, making declarations to God, asking God for forgiveness, forgiving others, making requests of God for others, and most importantly…. listening to God!

Through prayer our spirit connects with God and as a result, many good things happen. Prayer becomes a source of strength for the Believer. Prayer builds our faith in God as it puts our focus squarely on him and reminds us of who he is. It is also the ultimate way to relieve our lives of pressure. As the song says we are able to “take our burdens to the Lord and leave them there”.  Most importantly, it is through prayer God speaks to us in our spirit, and gives us comfort, encouragement, and direction for our lives.

When Jesus’ disciples asked him how to pray, he responded with what we now consider the “Model Prayer” or “The Lord’s Prayer” in Luke 11:1-3. It’s also found in Matthew 6:5-15. Take the time to read and study this prayer.
